Santa Cruz de Tenerife Free Walking Tour
Tour description
Ready to enter the city of Carnival? Squares full of history, architecture from different eras, castles and parishes, dream parks and an inimitable tropical atmosphere await you on our tour.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has an exciting story to tell you. Its streets, buildings, symbols and traditions will whisper to you the secrets of our Guanche past , linked from the beginning to its fishing port. Territory of conquest, both pirates and admirals tried to take over the city in numerous attacks, failing time and time again.
Sign up for this complete route through the city and soak up everything that Santa Cruz has to offer! We will meet at Parque García Sanabria , the heart of the city and its largest lung.
After seeing the Plaza Weyler , one of the most significant extensions of the term, we will visit Calle Castillo, which is the backbone of the commercial area and where facades of Canarian, Victorian and modernist styles stand out. The Plaza de España crowns this street and shows us the territory that the city has usurped from the sea.
Did you know we have a Masonic Temple ? In reality, it functioned more as an educational and secular center, but it was also used for meetings and rituals of the brotherhood. We will show you the Parish of Nuestra Señora del Pilar and also the Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias , home to many acts of the second most important Carnival in the world.
What are we called? Technically our name is "santacrucero", but the nickname "chicharrero" is so widespread that it is even used to refer to the inhabitants of Tenerife in general. Interestingly, it was the pejorative nickname used by the residents of La Laguna to refer to us, because of our habit of eating chicharros, cheap, low-quality fish. And how could a Monument to Chicharro be missing? We will show it to you along with another key symbol, the Drago, an emblematic plant of the Canary Islands.
There will be time to get to know aspects of the bustling cultural life of Santa Cruz, with buildings as unique as the Museum of Fine Arts or the Guimerá Theatre , the oldest in the Canary Islands. We also have the TEA, Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, with its avant-garde study room that attracts a varied student body.
Do you know Santiago Calatrava ? Our Auditorium is his work and has managed to become an icon of our urban landscape. Behind it, the César Manrique Maritime Park is an idyllic place to sunbathe.
Of course, we will also talk about gastronomy and leisure! We will take you to Calle de la Noria , a current recreation area with cocktail bars and restaurants specializing in new cuisine.
But the tour cannot end without highlighting other emblematic buildings in the city, such as the Cabildo de Tenerife , the Iglesia de la Concepción or the remains of our Castillo de San Cristóbal , a powerful defense of the island against attacks from the sea.
