Spooky stories like the events that took place in the Church of San Ginés, in Arenal Street. There, in 1353, thieves broke in to steal sacred and valuable objects, but they found an old man praying. They decapitated him so that he could not identify them or raise the alarm. Legend has it that his spirit still appears in the church to this day.
This is not the only notable decapitation in the Madrid of the Mysteries. Calle Cabeza owes its name to a macabre event of the same kind. In the 16th century, a servant beheaded the monk he worked for and stole all his money, fleeing to Portugal. Legend has it that years later he returned as a knight, wearing a ram's head under his cloak. When a policeman forced him to show the ram's head, he was shocked to discover that it was the head of the murdered monk.
As you can see, Madrid is not only home to famous mystery stories, such as that of the girl Raimunda and her psychophonies in the Palacio de Linares. There are also many small mystery stories that have echoed throughout history, and even today, in the form of apparitions, or various paranormal events, such as objects that move or strange sounds that are heard.
Emblematic buildings such as the Bank of Spain also have their own ghosts. Its workers experience paranormal occurrences such as objects that appear to be moved out of place, documents in which the pages move or strange sounds. A building with a lot of history, having previously been a hospital in the 17th century and a church in the 18th century. As if that were not enough, with all that the bank's workers suffer, it is also said that a specter with habits haunts the basements of the Banco de España.
The Spanish capital is a big city with a lot of history, and some of the events it has witnessed seem to have left their mark on different planes of reality. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy Mysterious Madrid thanks to the guided tours we offer you at Guruwalk.
