Free Tour of essential Elche
Tour description
At the indicated time we will meet in the heart of Elche and from there we will begin our free tour to see the most important corners of a city that has two World Heritage Sites . Do you want to know what they are?
We will walk towards the Municipal Park , where we will find the famous palm grove , a unique natural landscape that is a legacy of the Muslims' passage through the Iberian Peninsula. This place was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000 and is considered the largest palm forest in Europe .
During our route we will see the Altamira Palace , which over the years has been a fortress, a textile factory and a prison , although it is currently a museum. Did you know that it is one of the best preserved defensive complexes in the province of Alicante?
We will advance towards Calle Mayor to cross through the Central Market . Did you know that the vestiges of ancient Arab baths are preserved here? We will also go to the Elche Town Hall , a beautiful 15th century building that presides over the square.
In Glorieta Square, we will learn the story of the most famous lady in Elche along with her replica. Before finishing the tour, we will contemplate the Basilica of Santa María to discover the second Heritage, although in this case it is intangible. “El Misteri” takes place here every August, a religious representation whose origins date back to the 15th century.
