In 1565, Birgu was the heart of the Great Siege of Malta, when Ottoman forces relentlessly attacked the city, but the Knights of St John, aided by local defenders, valiantly repelled the invaders.
During World War II, Birgu witnessed intense air raids and naval attacks. As a strategic outpost in the Mediterranean, it faced incessant bombardment by Axis forces.
