Syracuse, Between history and myth: discovering Ortigia
Tour description
The tour starts from the ruins of the Temple of Apollo to learn about the origins of the second most important city of Greek civilization. Through the silence of the ancient Via Sacra, we will reach the monumental Piazza Archimede , where we will reconstruct the various historical stages of Ortigia, from the Middle Ages to the present. We will walk along Via della Maestranza , testimony of the careful and tiring work of the craftsmen of the past. We will visit the Giudecca , the ancient Jewish quarter, with its picturesque and characteristic alleys. We will know the wonderful Piazza del Duomo, the ancient agora of the Greek polis, with its valuable monuments, including the Cathedral. Born as a Doric temple in 480 BC, it was converted into a Christian church in the 6th century AD. A careful observation allows you to admire the traces of each historical period: from the columns of the temple, to the Norman battlements, up to the Baroque facade which, thanks to the limestone cladding, it assumes the typical golden color at sunset. Walking and getting lost in the narrow streets of Ortigia, our visit will culminate at the Fonte di Aretusa , one of the symbols of the city.
From the top of the ancient ramparts of the Lungomare Alfeo , we will enjoy a spectacular panorama.
The explanation will be enriched with anecdotes about traditions and popular customs, legends and myths, Sicilian lifestyle and gastronomy
