Secrets of Berlin: The Age of Enlightenment
Tour description
Please note that I will be giving this tour for the first time on January 6th: The duration of 90 minutes is an estimate. Unregistered participants are also welcome. The start and end point is the equestrian statue of Frederick the Great (Unter den Linden near Bebelplatz).
Together we will take a walk through the Age of Enlightenment in Prussia . Starting with the magnificent buildings around the Forum Fridericianum (today: Bebelplatz), we want to get to know Berlin in the 17th and 18th centuries in more detail.
Other centuries will not play a role. However, I will draw attention to the relevance of the Age of Enlightenment to the present at various points. I do not assume any prior knowledge, but a basic interest in history. Questions are always welcome: I have prepared extensively.
We will meet well-known and little-known characters, adventurers, alchemists, necromancers, con artists, a queen of the muses and a king of philosophers. We will pay particular attention to the famous, infamous and influential societies of the Age of Enlightenment, which was rarely as "enlightened" as we would like to believe. For more content references, see "Highlights" below.
The focus of my city walks is not on the usual historical representations of supposedly well-known eras, but on the mysterious, hidden, mystical and unfinished. I look forward to welcoming you on our walk together!
This city walk
- It is barrier-free as long as we don't enter a building. This is only an option in bad weather or when it is hot.
- Has very short walking distances.
