The Upper East Side is arguably Manhattan’s wealthiest neighborhood. Elite and quieter, yet still with New York City artsiness. We will see some of the remaining Gilded Age Mansions along Fifth Avenue ! In a concentrated area, these stunning castle and palazzo like structures were built from the late 1800s to the early 1900s by the Fat Cats of the Industrial Revolution. The remaining structures have new lives, some allowing partial access. We will also look at the area gallery scene in Lennox Hill from the Gagosian Gallery to other spaces of modern art including the Jewish Museum a leader in New Yorks contemporary art scene since the 1970s.
We will begin at the flagship Ralph Lauren store, a beautiful Gilded Age castle and work our way north between 5th and Madison avenues through what is now museum mile We will learn about the history of over 15 buildings from their origins to their conversions and current uses and looking at art along the way.
Some of the sites we will visit include : The Jewish Museum, the Andrew Carnegie Mansion, The Carlyle Hotel, The Gagosian Gallery, The Neue Galerie), The Payne Whitney House ( The Cultural Center of the French Embassy), the Henry Clay Frick Mansion and more! We will also be visiting inside some of the older buildings to get a taste of their grandeur and going inside some of the various art galleries with art ranging from early 20th century to now.
The Frick Mansion is currently under renovation and will open to the public in early 2025.
