Hipster Heartland of Singapore Walking Tour
Tour description
Did you know that Tiong Bahru is one of the oldest estate done by colonial builders dated back to the 1930s? Today, there is much more to Tiong Bahru than meets the eye!
It is a small, charming and chic housing estate awash with extraordinary eateries, cafes and eclectic shops.
The tour starts at Tiong Bahru MRT station Exit A, and brings you through an introduction to public housing in Singapore. Passing through a park, we reach a spot where we witness the Art-deco houses and shophouses. See a sculpture done by N S Lim, who created Singapore's Merlion. We will also see a community centre to learn about social lives of the past and today.
Moving on, we will also catch two art murals done by local artist Y C Yip, which depicted how people lived in this area in the past. We will see the Monkey God Temple and Chinese worship and festivals will be explained here.
The best part of the visit is to the Tiong Bahru Market, where we will see sundry and food stalls being colourfully presented. What is better than seeing is to try some local food and experience UNESCO-accredited Hawker Culture here! The tour will end at the Food Centre, and you will be guided on how to get to the nearest MRT station. Be sure to hang around at one of the cafes to immerse the refreshingly local vibes.
Join us and journey through Singapore's nostalgic estate and witness how it has transformed from a swamp to a captivating gem, where many locals still visit today for food and leisure.
