Tour description

Sternschanze & St Pauli - Between hipsters, punks and rock'n'roll

I'll take you on a tour through Hamburg's trendy districts. The 'Sternschanze' and 'St Pauli' are officially the coolest districts in Hamburg, comparable to Berlin's 'Kreuzberg'. They stand for colorful culture, experimental, alternative lifestyles and are historically important places for youth culture right up to the present day.

We visit:

  • The Rote Flora - a house occupied since the 1980s (formerly a theatre) and autonomous centre for culture and political protest movements
  • Schulterblatt - The street with the most colorful, hip cafés and bars. This is where you can feast. From Portuguese Natas to Swedish cinnamon rolls and vegan ice cream
  • Hamburg's 'Bunker' - A historic bunker full of trendy clubs and soon also a walkable park on the roof

Afterwards, you can wander through this lively place on your own. Visit cafes, restaurants and boutiques. With personal insider tips from me
And: If you're lucky, I'll perform a song for you live on my ukulele that goes with this wonderful part of town. That way, you'll definitely have a tour that you'll be talking about for a long time.

We meet in front of the small fruit stand in front of the Sternschanze S-Bahn station. I am the person with the short hair, the purple scarf and the fantastic smile.

  • 1
    Outside visit
    Schanzenturm

The Schanzenturm is the former largest water tower in Europe on a hill (28 m above sea level) in Hamburg's Sternschanze Park and has been administratively part of the Sternschanze district since March 1, 2008. After major protests from the surrounding residents, the water tower was transformed into a hotel. However, it remains a landmark of the district.

  • 2
    Outside visit
    Schulterblatt

The Schulterblatt is a young alternative shopping and entertainment street and is the core of the Schanzenviertel. It is considered a place to “see and be seen” with numerous shops, restaurants and pubs.

  • 3
    Outside visit
    Rote Flora

The Rote Flora is an autonomous center in the remaining building of the former Flora Theater, which has been occupied since November 1989. Like the occupied buildings on Hafenstrasse, it is considered a symbolic location of Hamburg's autonomous scene and a starting point for supra-regional social, cultural and politically motivated activities of the left-wing scene.

  • 4
    Outside visit
    Former ‘Cattle Slaughterhouse’

The former ‘Cattle Slaughterhouse’ is a true fixture in Hamburg's cultural scene and is worth a visit at any time. Here you will find events with different orientations at any time of the day or night. There are regular flea markets held on the old battlefield, where you can either just browse or sell your own things for a small demurrage fee

  • 5
    Outside visit
    The Bunker, Feldstrasse

Nestled between the Millerntor Stadium and the Karoviertel, the almost 50 meter high bunker on St. Pauli has long since become a landmark for young Hamburg. Known as the “Media Bunker”, “Bunker on Feldstrasse” or more recently as the “Green Bunker”, Hamburg's largest and one of the few remaining high-rise bunkers in the city stands for creativity, urban culture and participation. Today, Hamburg's largest accessible rooftop park is located here. This can be “climbed” after the tour
