On our Vatican City Free Tour, you'll discover the secrets hidden in St. Peter's Square and Castel Sant'Angelo. You'll see numerous breathtaking cultural and religious monuments as you walk around the world's smallest state. Please note that for those wishing to visit St. Peter's Basilica, it is essential to adhere to the dress code (shoulders and knees must be covered).
We will meet at Piazza di Ponte Sant Angelo 29, in front of the Antiques shop, at the scheduled time, to start our free tour of Vatican City. We will explore how the city emerged on the banks of the Tiber River, the connections between Sant'Angelo Castle and the Pope, and various other intriguing historical details.
Our journey will commence with a stroll to Borgo Pio, a small Renaissance neighborhood leading to the area outside Castel Sant'Angelo. We'll delve into the origins of this fortress, initially built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family, and discuss unique features such as the striking angel statue crowning the building.
Our next stop will be the entrance of the Passetto di Borgo, the secret passageway constructed by the Vatican in 1277 for the Pope's discreet travel from his residence to Castel Sant'Angelo. You may recall Tom Hanks walking through it in the film 'Angels and Demons'.
Following our visit to the Passetto di Borgo, we'll proceed to the renowned St. Peter's Square. This vast plaza, designed by the architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini, is considered one of the most beautiful squares globally.
The final destination on our tour will be St. Peter's Basilica, where we'll marvel at its breathtaking facade and impressive dome. We'll delve into the contributions of various artists, from Michelangelo to Bramante, involved in the construction and design of the Catholic Church's primary shrine.
Our tour will conclude here, and we'll bid our farewells after spending 2 hours exploring Vatican City.
