Hey there! I'm Marko, a local of Dubrovnik. I live inside the Old town (only 1000 people actually do!) so I consider myself privileged. I can't wait to show you around - this is my hometown, I grew up here and I know it inside out. I have a degree in journalism and public relations. So, when you go on a walk with me, you will be my public and I will be relating the history of my city!
Welcome everybody to this unusual walk along the walls of Dubrovnik!
Join me for a guided tour of the northern half of the city walls and you'll hear about cannons, medieval warfare, military engineering, smart diplomacy, and the struggle to survive!
We'll have nine stops along the way where you'll learn about the old Republic of Ragusa, the ancient Dubrovnik city-state, and how we protected our freedom and remained independent for 450 years, facing powerful rivals like Venice and the Ottoman Empire.
We'll cover the history of the walls, how they were built, and how they defended the city throughout the centuries. We'll also talk about the 1991 war in Croatia and the attacks on Dubrovnik.
As a local, I'll even show you my street - you can see it from the walls! (yes, I live inside the Old town ;) All the while you'll be able to enjoy amazing views of the Old Town and the Adriatic Sea.
This walk is a one-part guided tour, one-part do-your-own-thing: I'll leave you halfway through the walls, but enriched with new knowledge you can continue on your own! Feel free to take as many photos as you want, and walk the rest of the walls at your own pace... Just enjoy!
IMPORTANT !! - Please keep in mind that you must buy either the regular tickets for the walls or the Dubrovnik Pass to enter the walls. They are NOT included!
I will be waiting in the corner of the square in front of Revelin fort, overlooking the Old harbour, by the cannon. I will be holding a red and white flag. See you there!
We'll enter the walls here. Make sure you have your Dubrovnik Pass ready on your phone so that we can skip the line for tickets!
We'll talk about Revelin fort, one of five main fortifications that protected the city.
We'll see the oldest monastery in Dubrovnik, established in the early 13th century.
This is where I'll tell you about the recent history and the attacks on Dubrovnik in 1991.
This is where we'll dive into the history of old Dubrovnik and our rivalry with Venice and relationship with the Ottoman Turks!
We'll climb up to the highest point of the walls for the best views!
You'll see the most amazing outdoor basketball court in the world, below the city walls and above a 16th century gun foundry!
This is where we'll discuss the structure of the walls, how they were built and the engineering behind it.
This will be our final stop! We'll say our goodbyes here, after having a little quiz at the end, just so that I know that you actually learned something along the way, before you continue on your own! ;)
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
