The statue of Edvard Grieg sculpted by Ingebrigt Vik is a popular Bergen landmark. Edvard Hagerup Grieg was born in Bergen in 1843. He was a Norwegian composer and pianist, widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide.
Founded in 1850 as Det Norske Theater, this theater owes its existence to the pioneering vision of Norwegian violinist Ole Bull. Its primary objective was to foster the growth of Norwegian playwrights. Among its notable early contributors was Henrik Ibsen, who served as both a resident writer and an artistic director.
Next, we will admire Bryggen from across the harbor, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The wharf was once a bustling hub of trade during the Hanseatic period and is now a popular tourist destination. The colorful wooden buildings along the wharf are home to shops, restaurants, and museums, including the Hanseatic Museum and the Schøtstuene Museum.
From there, we will make our way down to the famous Fish Market, which is located near the harbor. This bustling market is a great place to sample some of the freshest seafood that Bergen has to offer.
After the Fish Market, I will show you where you can jump on the Fløibanen funicular, which can take you up to the top of Mount Fløyen. The ride up offers breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding fjords. At the top, you can enjoy a hike or take in the view from one of the cafes or restaurants. This is where we end the tour.
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
