Hello, I am Thyl (pronounced “Teel”). I moved to the town of Silves 5 years ago and love it! I am an explorer and a painter, as well as a nature and history enthusiast. It is a joy to share with others the places and landscapes that I find interesting and to transmit some local knowledge. A few years ago I started guiding (and driving) tours with small groups in the local countryside (Jeep Safaris in the hills, Boat Cruises on the river and Walking Tours). The main interest was nature but I always hoped one day to also focus on the culture of the place where I live. At home, my bookcase is full of history books and now, after the necessary research, I am pleased to present, in a fun and friendly way, the amazing town where I live.
The Beauty of Silves and a Taste of History!
Join me for a friendly walk through time and a visit of the beautiful medieval town where I live. Silves has a picturesque setting and an interesting story to tell us about past civilizations. Our walk gives an overview of the main sights, a taste of the little streets, and some hidden surprises.
We meet at the river and go up the hill to the castle. We pass the Roman bridge, the dock, the market, the town square, and the city walls. We will enter the cathedral for a brief visit (2€ entrance fee). We will also leave the trodden path to visit some of the back streets. There are some great places to eat and drink and I will show you one of my favourite hidden gems.
This experience ends at the top of the town next to the castle. From here you can visit the castle by yourself or have an easy walk back down to the meeting point. You may also decide to have a meal or stay in Silves a little longer.
I will wait for you at the entrance of the tourist office (posto de Turismo de Silves) which is next to the river (on the Silves side) and also next to a large parking. I will be wearing a blue cap.
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
