The fundamentals of Bergen
Tour description
Do you want to know the essentials of Bergen with a short tour?
Come with me on this 1,5-hour tour and discover the main downtown highlights within a short walking distance.
We will start the tour visiting Bryggen, the Hanseatic wharf, with its iconic wooden alleys and tilted houses, and we will discover the trading history that was crafted here, making Bergen a key neuralgic point in European trading during the Middle Ages.
We will continue the tour roaming along the narrow and crooked streets of the quaint quarter of Fjellsiden. A couple of steep roads and some stairs will bring us up to a beautiful lookout over the city center, where we will enjoy the shining tile roofs of the houses that are a trademark of the city.
Going back down to the city center we will go to the central square of Festplassen, with its big artificial lake and the impassible swans and ducks swaying in its cold water throughout the whole year.
Before we end, we will visit the Theater of Bergen or, as its Norwegian name indicates, Den Nationale Scene, the National Stage that served as a platform for rebuilding national identity after the dissolution of the Union with Denmark.
We will finish our tour in the commercial square in the well-known Fish Market, where we will see a big variety of delicacies of the North Sea and, of course, the famous stockfish.
