Most of my life has been towards the tourist and tourism. I just love it. I've been living in UK, France, and Lithuania but now I've decided to return and make a bet on slow sustainable nature based tourism in the Interior of Portugal. I'm 43 years old and I'm passionate about history, novels, and romance. All my tours are built on top of my research on the region/subject, and I'm continuous improvement of my art. I love to talk with people and I love the region. I'm studying Environmental engineering so I can focus on improving eco tourism in Portugal and Douro in particular.
Welcome to the peaceful center of Alijó. Yes, I know a small town but with great people. Did you know that we were the house of the first ever social canteen in Portugal? Or that we have a Tree that's it's older than anyone alive? This and much more is what I have to offer you on this 1h free walking tour of Alijó. Which is probably the first small village professional tour in all of Portugal. I'm a true believer off Slow Sustainable Green Tourism, so I only accept small groups of people and I take the time to enjoy and let you enjoy Alijó.
Our tour will start beside the monument celebrating the 500 year charter of Alijó. We will walk towards the Palace of justice while talking about the etymology of the word Alijó.
Once in front of Justice Place, we will meet Comendador José Rufino and his work at the beginning of the 1900s as Mayor of Alijó.
We will then drift to the churchyard and meet the centenarian tree, the first lords of Alijó and the old primary school and off course the neo baroque style church.
A bit further along and we are in Santo António, here we can find out all about "Casa dos Noura" and the fountain of Gricha and her thermal water.
We will talk a bit about the architecture of the region and why is like that, as we move to the city hall square to talk about the endogenous products of the region, the begins of law and order in the village and some other curiosity about the Napoleon invasions.
As we move towards the place where we started we will first stop by the "Man of Douro" to know the story's of hard labor in the wine making.
We will then visit the chapel of the "Lord of the Steps" and talk about the 3 types of landscape that Alijó offers.
And as we come to an end of our tour, there will be time for Q&A, about where to buy souvenirs, what to drink and what to eat. Other tours and sightseeing options in the region.
By the (withe tower) memorial of the celebration of 500 years of attribution of the charter act to the village of Alijó, beside the Man of Douro roundabout.
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
