Nowa Huta: Ideal Communist City Tour by Walkative!
Tour description
Are you ready to embark on a journey back in time to one of the most intriguing and little known periods of Krakow's history? Join us for our Communist Krakow tour that is taking place in the heart of Nowa Huta, a district designed and built as an ideal communist city and discover the fascinating story behind it!
Step into the Past:
Nowa Huta means the "New Steelworks." It was a remarkable experiment in urban planning and a symbol of Poland's post-World War II industrial growth. Built during the communist era, this district was envisioned as a model city that would reflect the principles of socialism (not to mention its huge role in Joseph Stalin’s propaganda and totalitarian dictatorship). The tour takes you through the story of Nowa Huta's creation, its significance during communism, and its transformation into a thriving neighborhood, which today, surprisingly, has so much to offer.
Unique Insights:
- Explore one of only two still existing ideal communist cities in the world! Get a chance to see the representative parts of Nowa Huta – monumental Central Square and the Avenue of Roses.
- Enter the ‘Ark of Lord’ - one of the most architecturally unique churches you will ever see, a symbol of spiritual resistance of Catholic workers against the communist party.
- Reveal the story of a heroic struggle of Polish workers, initiators of great strikes and protests that eventually started the fall of a Communist Block, and the beginnings of the biggest social movement of all times – Solidarity.
- Experience the everyday life of Nowa Huta, a district unspoiled by mass tourism, which is still under heavy influence of the Communism period and the nostalgia of its heroic past.
Unearth the Hidden History:
Our expert guides will lead you through the streets of Nowa Huta, showing you its unique architecture, monuments, and stories that still echo with the ideals and struggles of the past.
