Free Tour of Ortigia Island
Tour description
The island of Ortigia is the oldest and most fascinating part of Syracuse , a place that has seen a succession and stratification, in over three thousand years, of important expressions of the major civilizations of the Mediterranean. In just over a square kilometer there are Greek temples and Christian churches, Swabian, Aragonese and Baroque palaces, courtyards, Arab alleys, shops, modest houses and large public buildings.
The itinerary starts from Ponte Umbertino which connects the island with the mainland. Continuing towards Via dell'Apollonion it will be possible to admire the remains of the Temple of Apollo , the oldest stone temple built by the Greeks in the west. The guided tour will continue towards the center of the island passing through Piazza Archimede with its beautiful Diana Fountain , the work of Giulio Moschetti.
After a short walk through the alleys you will arrive at Piazza Duomo . The square, one of the most beautiful in Italy, shines with light thanks to the limestone with which the surrounding buildings were made: the Cathedral , the Town Hall or Palazzo Vermexio, Palazzo Beneventano .
