CIVIL WAR RETURNS TO THE UNIVERSITY CITY-!!
Welcome to one of the most emblematic settings of the Spanish Civil War: the University City and the Clinical Hospital, protagonists of one of the bloodiest and most strategic battles of the conflict.
In November 1936, the struggle for Madrid reached its peak in this enclave. Francoist troops, led by General José Enrique Varela , advanced from the Casa de Campo in an attempt to conquer the capital. However, the Republican resistance, with key figures such as General José Miaja , managed to stop the advance in these areas, turning the University City into a stable front for much of the war.
The Hospital Clínico was a crucial target. Attacked and retaken on several occasions, its control symbolised dominance over the heart of the University City, where buildings such as the Faculty of Medicine , Philosophy and Letters or the School of Architecture were devastated and riddled with trenches.
Strategic combat point of the International Brigades where some of them, such as the XII or the XV, stood out.
This tour will allow us to retrace the traces of that battle, understanding how this place became a symbol of resistance and of the strategies that defined the course of the war. Here, among buildings and memories, history comes to life.
Experience, feel, live what it was like to have opposing troops face to face, day after day, less than a hundred meters away and without being able to move an inch, without being able to advance a single inch of ground, while shells explode around you and bullets whistle over your head.
