Was really great walk , took through markets and some local temples also got demo on making egg coffee. Really lovely guide with a good knowledge of the old quarter . Would definitetly recommend .
Hans is a fantastic guide. He is kind, passionate, funny and generous giving so much information! We loved the tour!
This is not a rant and everyone’s experience varies. I’d like to note that I did give the suggested tip and made 0 complaints during the 3 hour walk. Not an angry Karen, just an Asian traveler giving feedback on my experience. Misha was a kind person, but not someone I would have chosen for this tour. She has only lived in Vietnam for three years, doesn’t speak Vietnamese, and we got the sense she didn’t fully understand or respect the culture. When we asked questions she couldn’t answer she said “I don’t know I’m only saying what my colleague told me to”. After getting the same response, it was clear certain questions couldn’t be asked. At the markets she said the bamboo/dried shrimp/dried fish didn’t smell great/was too strong, said she wouldn’t eat specific eggs and fresh vegetables sold on the streets, she doesn’t eat the meat they prepare out in the warm weather but instead buys it in shopping malls, and called the market gross on the way out. We were shoo’d from many stalls because the group would surround the booths and the vendors were unhappy we weren’t buying. It could have been an easy fix to have everyone stand on the side. Misha also said the clothes have “fake sizes” and called everyone an XL (even to the lady who was clearly a size M in Asian sizing). I don’t think she’s aware that Asian sizing is petite in comparison to other countries. The tags are accurate for Vietnam and their people. She also preferred walking in the street instead of taking the very empty and available side walks (which Hanoi has a LOT of congested traffic and bikes). She crossed streets by herself without leading the group. At one point 2 people decided to stay behind and she didn’t notice until someone else on the tour pointed it out literally 20 minutes later. The tour only had 6 people. Misha said a large percentage of Vietnam has the surname Nguyen because great grandfathers would have 5+ wives. I have this last name and it comes from deeper history dating back to royal dynasties, politics, and people changing their surnames to pledge their loyalty to new rulers. There was a growing lack of confidence in the info she was sharing. Misha said we could go to the train street and try the egg coffee. She didn’t know where the closer train route was and I provided her the address (again, my first time and first day in Hanoi). It was essentially the end of the tour and when we got there everyone decided to go separate ways instead of sitting down and drinking coffee. Misha requested a 4-5 star review at the end of our tour instead of asking for feedback. I’d say she is knowledgeable in some things, but has no in depth contribution to the beauty of the culture or history of the country. Again, she’s a nice person, but not someone I would have paid for a three hour tour on my short trip nor someone I would recommend to any of my Asian friends who love and grew up eating “smelly” fish, shrimp and bamboo.
Luis did it great! Even with the rain he manage to show us Hanoi in a very entretained way. His Spanish was super clear, i congratulate him for his effort and passion. Thank you!!!
Very fun way to navigate & explore the chaos that is the old quarter! Chris kept it fun & informative, even on a cold rainy day!
