We adored our guide, Maria, and would have happily eaten poison if she recommended it. But the tour did not sufficiently delve into the various FOODs offered in the 3 carefully chosen and distinctive markets. We did get a social history of each market but not the "feel" of each market. In the most unique (for Vienna) market, we did not taste any food typical of the immigrant populations. We did have a delicious Viennese delicacy but a Turkish bureka or smelling/tasting non-Austrian spices/herbs would have been better.
This was the best walking tour we did in Vienna (out of 4). And Christina absolutely MADE the tour. I had some expectations that there would be more focus on Hitler and the rise of Austrian fascism but Christina widened the historical, social, economic and political picture with her droll humor, extensive knowledge and ability to weave complex facts into simple but not simplistic explanations. Methodologically, she found us places to sit/rest as well as taking into account our need for shade! We learned much and, as weird as it may sound, enjoyed learning about this very dark side of history.
The Prime/Guru Tours "Vienna Street Art" tour offered a very different slice of Vienna's classic and classical sites. We saw the "underbelly" of a city that doesn't have much of a seamy or counterculture side. Our guide, Rita, was wonderful. She made the tour for us but it was, on the whole, a bit flat because, as Rita implied -the Viennese are not much on protest and dissension. Still I would recommend this tour if you want a different Viennese experience.
