Ryo - Tour Guide in Tokyo

Konnichiwa ! I'm Ryo, your local guide. I was born and raised in Tokyo. I graduated from Shinjuku Public High School, a 5-minute walk from Shinjuku Station and then went to Waseda University, which is about a 30-minute walk from the same station. I used to live in Kabukicho town and worked for a movie production company located in the Shinjuku Nichome gay town. I have first-hand experience going to many of the establishments which we will discuss during the tour.

Currently, I work as a cram school English teacher during the day, teaching both high school students and recent graduates.

This tour was both enlightening and entertaining, offering a fascinating glimpse into a side of Japanese culture that most visitors rarely encounter or discuss openly. Ryo-san proved to be an exceptional guide. He was approachable, patient, and refreshingly candid. He answered every question we threw at him without hesitation, even when we ventured into topics that most Japanese might shy away from. Our group certainly asked plenty of them, and he handled it all with candor and composure. What made the experience especially compelling was the wealth of context he shared, which included insights that you simply won’t find in conventional guidebooks. His perspective as a local added depth and nuance, helping us understand how a society that can appear quite reserved in everyday life expresses itself very differently within this particular sphere. The contrast was striking and genuinely eye-opening. The atmosphere throughout the tour was easygoing and lively, with plenty of playful banter among the participants. Ryo-san’s storytelling added to the fun, and his dramatic reenactment of the Godzilla statue’s fire-breathing effect was unforgettable... one that I'll forever cherish in my heart ;-) Thank you, Ryo-san, for such a distinctive and memorable experience. It was engaging, informative, and thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end.

Yoel san ! Thank you very much for such a thoughtful and detailed review. I’m truly happy to hear that you found the tour both enlightening and entertaining. The area we explored shows a side of Japanese culture that is often overlooked, so I always try to share as much context and history as possible. It means a lot to know that you enjoyed the deeper perspective and the open discussions during the walk. I’m also glad you felt comfortable asking many questions — those conversations are often what make each tour unique and memorable. Our group had great energy that night, and the playful atmosphere definitely made the experience even more fun for me as well. And I’m very happy to hear that the dramatic Godzilla moment left such a strong impression! It’s one of my favorite little moments during the tour. I always enjoy asking participants about their countries and politics. Since the U.S. and Israel have just started a war against Iran, I was curious to hear your perspective as an Israeli citizen. You shared an honest insight into what this war is about, and it helped me see the situation from a different perspective. Again thank you for joining, I think I enjoyed that night as much as or maybe more than you guys did. It was a special night for sure.

The tour with Ryo was spectacular in all aspects. Despite the pouring rain he patiently showcased and explained all the various establishments in Shinjuku in unflinching clarity and detail. His tour also covered the history of Shinjuku and how it became the bustling nightlife district of today. This tour is highly recommended for interested visitors with an open mind and be warned: it is not for the faint of heart!

Response from Ryo
Roland-san, thank you very much for your review! The weather was one of the worst since I started doing tours. It rained heavily and was very cold. Naturally, two out of the three participants dropped out during the tour. However, you stayed with me and walked with me for more than 2.5 hours in that rain, and I really appreciated that. After the tour, I felt like we had accomplished something together. Since it turned into a truly private tour, we were able to talk a lot about the cultures of Japan and Switzerland. I learned many interesting things from you, and it also made me feel happy to realize that there are many wonderful people in Europe!

Ryo San is an outstanding story teller. The way he explains the history and culture is a different level. He did top-class research before coming to the walk. If you get a chance to do this tour with Ryo San, you should take it.

I had an absolutely wonderful experience with this guide. Even though it was very cold and no other guests joined the tour that day, he still went ahead and gave me the full experience as a private tour, with the same enthusiasm, professionalism, and kindness as if it had been a large group. He was incredibly friendly, patient, and attentive at all times, always making sure I was comfortable and enjoying every moment. His explanations were clear, interesting, and full of passion for Tokyo and its culture. I never felt rushed, and he adapted the pace perfectly to me. He also took many great photos, which I truly appreciate and will cherish as memories of this trip. It’s rare to find someone so dedicated and genuinely kind. I felt very lucky to have him as my guide, and I highly recommend him to anyone visiting Tokyo who wants a warm, personal, and memorable experience. You won’t regret it. Thank you so much for everything!

Mario san ! Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful review. Although it was a very cold day and the tour became a private one, it was my pleasure to guide you, and I’m very happy to hear that you enjoyed the experience. For me, every guest is important, regardless of the group size, and your words mean a great deal to me as a guide. I’m glad you found the explanations interesting and felt comfortable throughout the tour. I also really enjoyed our conversations and learning about Spain's adult culture — it made the night even more special for me as well. I’m happy to hear that you liked the photos and that they will remain as memories of your trip to Tokyo. Thank you again for your warm encouragement and recommendation. I truly feel lucky to have met you, and I hope our paths cross again someday. Wishing you all the best and safe travels wherever you go next.

Vielen dank !

Chris san ! Arigato for you review ! Actually , I like a one person tour a lot. The reason is that I can hear a lot of stories about the country he/she is from. Sometimes I even forget guiding and keep talking about his or her country. That is the pleasure of having small group tours. I am glad you liked the tour. I think Germans tend to have good understanding about Japanese sex culture, maybe because they have a lot of adult establishments over there. Someday I want to go over there and visit these places!
