Civil War Free Walking Tours in Barcelona

Very interesting tour! I was glad to find one on the civil war. I came to Barcelona and awkwardly realised I know pretty much nothing of the Spanish civil war. Well, turns out the Spaniards don't know much either! I would recommend reading some sort of recap of the events and players beforehand though as there is a lot of information. It was a bit hard to follow along at times because of how complex the situation was for my first timer brain.

Excellent explanation of civil war, events leaving to it , aftermath of war, Franco’s rule and long term impact on Spain. Yannis is a great communicator and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend his tour.

Informative and enjoyable tour with well informed guide

This was a very interesting and unique tour. I really enjoyed the way Chrisa (our tour guide) was explaining the history and what happened during the civil war. I would warmly recommend this tour to anyone that want to get a deeper understanding of Spains history.

Onno is very knowledgeable and insightful. While the topic is dark, he managed to make it not depressing. He answered every question and it was clear how passionate he is to his work. I highly recommend on the tour!

Make sure you're interested in history before booking this tour! We only went to a few places but stayed at each of them for a good amount of time, as Filipa had so much to share about the Spanish civil war and Franco's regime. Well worth it if you have the interest :)

This walking tour by Filipa was educational and informative. Her clear explanation of the political landscape of Spain from 1800s until 1976 was made more interesting with personal stories and anecdotes. Her photos filled out the tour even further. Filipa's attention to detail was exemplary. The walk was easy and safe. I highly recommend this experience for history enthusiasts and those who want to dig deeper into Spanish politics.

Great insight into the Spanish Civil war - not covered on other tours we took. 5 stars!

Filipa was just outstanding in presenting a captive and understandable story of the Spanish Civil War and its impact on Barcelona. I loved every part of the tour and was thrilled for a full 2.5 hours. I learned so much about Barcelona, the Catalan society, and Spain in general.

I had the pleasure of taking a tour with Chrisa, and it was truly the best experience I've had in Barcelona. Her knowledge and professionalism were unmatched. She skillfully wove together hours of fascinating content with an impressive depth of background information. Chrisa went above and beyond, even taking the time to answer all my questions and messages. The tour was both moving and impactful. I would absolutely love to explore more tours on similar topics, ideally with the same high level of professionalism, in perfect English, and perhaps a bit shorter but just as engaging and well-articulated

I just can't say enough about how much everyone in our group enjoyed this tour. Felipa was incredibly well-informed and I felt like I was attending a college-level lecture about the Spanish Civil War, not a free tour. She was incredibly engaging and made the history come alive for us. It made me want to delve deeper into this on my own and I really hope to start reading and watching more about the subject. I simply could not recommend her and this tour more highly.

This was our first GuruWalk, so we were really interested in gauging not only the quality of tours offered by providers, but also the ease of using GuruWalk with the "pay what you like" feature. This tour was WONDERFUL. The quality of the historical context, communication, storytelling, and ability to answer questions from the group was just great. This was one of the best tours that we had in a 2-week trip, fee or not.

Filipa was incredibly passionate and insightful. More of a strolling lecture than a sightseeing tour. Definitely worthwhile!

Fantastic tour, outlining parts of the history of Spain and Barcelona that most often go untold. Filippa is a very knowledgeable guide and translates that into story from very well.

This is a most interesting tour for those interested in the history of the civil war and its aftermath. Understand that there was very little fighting in Barcelona, except for one 5-day period of open conflict between elements of the Republican coalition. So there isn’t a lot of different sites to visit, although the tour does go to the those that have some significance. Most of the value of the tour consists of a running lecture by the guide on the war; that alone was a most valuable and entertaining experience for me.

the tour was very good! Chrisa was an excellent guide, both very knowledgeable and passionate about the story of the civil war, it was a very good introduction to everything that happened in those years. the only thing i think could improve is to try and work in more connection between the content of the tour and the places we went through. some places were related to the story, but some not as much, and the point of a walking tour in my opinion is to see where things happened, otherwise it's a moving lecture. Chrisa said in advance that nothing much is left from that period, because of franco, but just as an example, the bridge with the skull can be a good place to talk about the inner war between the anarchists and the communists (with all the sandbags), and the main square at the end, with the Katalonian goverment building from one side and the spanish goverment building on the other, is a good place to talk about the tension left from the dictatorship years between Catalonia and central goverment. oherwise, it was a very good tour and i highly reccomand it.
