Madrid, from medieval city to capital of the kingdom
Tour description
Many visitors, but also many Madrid residents, are unaware of the intense life of the city between the 9th and 16th centuries. I invite you to get to know her. A very interesting city full of events that filled these seven centuries, often forgotten, unknown or mixed with events from later centuries.
In 865, the emir Muhammad I ordered the construction of a citadel in Mayrit ("abundance of rivers of water"), the village near Manzanares, located on a promontory and surrounded by 15 river basins. Conquered by Alfonso VI in 1083, who began to build the so-called Christian wall, a work that would last until 1212.
We will get to know its neighborhoods, its parishes and its medieval organization. Its markets and its suburbs and the stately mansions built in times of great splendor, such as the Torre de los Lujanes.
During these centuries it actively participated in political life and was the headquarters of the medieval itinerant court on several occasions.
