Free tour of the work of the shellfish harvesters
Tour description
Are you curious to learn about this work through an authentic Galician shellfish harvester ?
Shellfish fishing on foot is one of the most representative activities of the Rías Baixas.
I offer you the possibility of enjoying a nice walk on the beach while I explain to you what the job I do is like.
I like my job and I teach it with passion.
Do not hesitate!
We will begin the visit from the beach breakwater.
At this first stop, I will have prepared an exhibition of the different fishing gear and I will give you a brief demonstration of how we use them. You will understand what spring tides are and why the moon is our boss.
I will teach you to distinguish the different species of clams that we collect. And don't let them sell you "cat for a buck"!
As we head towards the fishing town of Carril, the curious question will arise as to why the beach is full of sticks and I will tell you what they are for.
From how you become a shellfish harvester to what this dangerous occupation is about and all this seasoned with a lot of anecdotal stories told in the first person.
We will finish in the Alameda Vella park, next to the Fish Market. Once there I will explain the final process, the sale. From how the seafood auction works to the reason for the expression “all the fish are sold.”
As a final touch to this curious tour, what better than to enjoy unique and unbeatable views of the Island of Cortegada, and its laurel forest, the largest in all of Europe.
