I am a high school teacher of English and history, living in downtown Halmstad with my teenage boys. I love to walk, talk and meet new people. I have worked as a guide in Stockholm and now want to show anyone interested the beauties of Halmstad and the Swedish west coast.
Halmstad is the capital of the region Halland and is a hub when it comes to trade and commerce in the area. This is also how it used to be in the medieval period when Halmstad was the most central part of the joint kingdoms Denmark, Sweden and Norway in the 14th century. There are many things to see both in terms of modern development and historically. The city also has beautiful scenery and landscapes situated as it is, close to the ocean with sandy beaches all around and some serene rivers added to it.
Some of the top things to see in the city of Halmstad that will be covered in the are:
- the 17th century Danish castle
- the massive St Nicolai church with origins from the 14th century
- Picasso’s statue Head of a Woman
- Northern Kattegatt Gate and remnants of the medieval wall that surrounded the city
- Lilla Torg and the excavations from a Dominican monastery
- The Bastion looking over Nissan River
I will stand at the big fountain Europa and the Bull in the middle of the town square. I will have a sign!
