Tour description
The León Route in Seville offers a historical tour focused on the relationship of the Ponce de León family with the following places:
- Convent of San Agustín : Founded in the 13th century, it housed the tombs of the Ponce de León family until the 15th century, when they were moved to the crypt of the Annunciation. The image of Christ of Saint Augustine, venerated by the family, had significant devotion.
- Carmona Gate : This gate was the entry point to Seville from Carmona and other nearby areas. Its demolition in the 19th century did not erase its history as a source of food and resources for the city.
- Brotherhood of San Roque : Founded in 1901, it has a connection with the Christ of San Agustín. Annually, it pays tribute to this religious figure.
- Brotherhood of the Blacks : This brotherhood, originated in 1399 near the Puerta de Carmona, provided worship space for the black population.
- Emasesa Building (Old Ponce de León Palace) : The old family palace was rebuilt during the Renaissance and served as a residence and political-social center.
- Parish of Santa Catalina : This Gothic-Mudejar church has a historical relationship with the family, who used it as a place of strategy and meeting.
- Remains of the Marchena Palace : Decorative elements, such as tiles and plasterwork, were transferred to the house of the Duchess of Lebrija, preserving the artistic essence of the Ducal Palace of Marchena.
- Annunciation Building : The former Convent of the Annunciation, now the Faculty of Fine Arts, houses the crypt of the Ponce de León and other illustrious figures.
- Convent of San Pablo de los Dominicos : Related to the Ponce de León family, it protected converts during the pogroms of 1390.
- Plaza de San Francisco : Here, Rodrigo Ponce de León was appointed Captain General of Seville, and Miguel de Cervantes had military and administrative ties with the family.
