Hi everyone! I'm Ilya, an artist, musician, enthusiast and enterpreneur from Russia. I have been living in Essaouira for three years. Let me show you this amazing town :)
Hello everyone. I am very happy to introduce you to Essaouira. I live here for almost three years.
My tour is an ode to this wonderful town. We will start from the square and go through hidden small streets of the Medina. On our way we will see my favorite workshops and small hidden cafes of the tourist path.
You don’t need to buy anything from workshop or cafe. I just want to share this places with you so you can enjoy them later on your own.
First of all we will go and see the best ocean view from a small terrace which is very hard to find. It is an old hotel, where nobody lives. It only works as a terrace for coffee and tea. Not many people know about it and sometimes you can find yourself all alone in this calm and peaceful spot.
Then we will go through a dark tunnel which will lead us to one of the most talented Guembri makers in Essaouira - Said. He makes many different instruments out of camel skin. And he is a good friend of mine.
Afterward we will head to another small street where I will show you a Berber antique gallery. There we will see many decorative and everyday use objects from the past.
Our journey will continue further towards the Scala - one of the main tourist spots in Essaouira, but we will escape the main flow and go under it to see a workshop of another friend - talented Didou, son of famous Essaouiran artist Ben Ali.
After seeing his amazing workshop I will show you the smallest and the only Ramen restaurant in the Medina which is run by a Japanese couple and has a fantastic ocean view.
Later we will go through a busy street to find ourselves in front of my favorite street food spot with fried fish and some authentic restaurant not far from it.
Our final stop will be the huge sacred tree which is still used for Berber rituals. It is also hidden from main path and you need to pass through some shops to see it.
I will be at Bab El Mechouar or it is also called Bab el Menzeh. The gates that are facing fish port, near place Moulay Hassan. I am a tall guy with long blond hair. Look like surfer a little bit :)
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
