Walking Tour Aarhus: From the Viking Age to the Modern City
Tour description
From the Viking Age to the Modern City
Aarhus is the second-largest city in Denmark and one of the oldest cities in the country. The city began as a Viking settlement in the 700s and the city center is still where it was 1200 years ago.
We start this tour in the center of the city, in front of the Aarhus Theater, a building that mixes Art Nouveau, Viking symbols, and an iconic gargoyle at the top.
This tour will take you from the past to the present, focusing on art (painting, sculpture), architecture, and history, giving you a great overview of the city.
What can be seen on this walking tour:
- Theater Aarhus;
- Cathedral (10 min inside - you will get some information about frescoes, the oldest fresco in the Cathedral around 1300);
- Church of Our Lady;
- Møllestien (Most of the houses were built between 1870 and 1885);
- Aros Museum (outside);
- City Hall (modern, minimalist/functionalism/Bauhaus school);
(But that's not all... there are so many little details that you can only find if you have someone to guide you)
PS: be ready to walk and bring a windproof jacket. After all, we are in Denmark. :-)
