Greetings. I'm Will, and I'm from England, but have made Madrid my home for nearly a decade. I've built a great life here from learning and sharing the city's history, and enjoying the food and drink of its legendary bars that can be found on almost every corner. My favourite subject of all is the Spanish Civil War and very much hope that you get to enjoy my tour on it some day!
The Spanish Civil War is considered the darkest period in the modern history of the country . However, there are many fascinating and inspiring stories about the people who fought in it. From the place of the assault on the Montaña barracks in the iconic Temple of Debod , to the battle front around the Parque del Oeste , we will follow the course of the defense of Madrid against Franco's army. We will also see monuments that show evidence of the battle and commemorate the soldiers, artists, and writers who left an eternal impact on Spain's heritage.
Things to consider before booking:
Distance. This tour covers a lot of ground with some uphill paths so please bring comfy footwear and water. There will be places to sit down and drinking taps at some of the stops for resting and refills. There is just one public bathroom along the way at the Rosaleda del Parque del Oeste, so make sure you go before we start, or we can make a stop when we go by.
Language. If English is not your first language, and you have trouble following my accent or speech patterns, then please let me know so that I can try to make my stories more understandable for you.
Questions. The Spanish Civil War is a very dense subject, which is why I always encourage my guests to ask questions along the way. It means that I'll be able to interact with you more if you don't just want a passive experience. So please ask me anything!
I'll be by the stairs between the Don Quijote statue and the Santalucia building on Plaza de España, carrying a green folder.
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
