Music, cinema, art, history and murders in Malasaña and Chueca
Tour description
If you want to be surprised, come to know Malasaña and Chueca with me. Its picturesque streets and houses served as the setting for films by Almodóvar, Alejandro Amenábar or Álex de la Iglesia, and for music video clips by Manu Chao or Siniestro Total, and for zarzuelas (not in vain, Chueca is named after the composer Federico Chueca, who lived in the area). In addition, many of its bars are closely linked to the so-called "Movida madrileña". And for those who like urban art, its walls serve as a canvas for "Pinta Malasaña", a festival that has been held since 2015, and which beautifies even more, if possible, its streets and squares. There is also a lot of history here, like the one that was forged during the May 2 uprising in 1808. Its beautiful buildings treasure curious anecdotes, such as those related to the Bauer Palace, the Church of San Antonio de los Alemanes or the Royal Hospice de San Fernando, today the Madrid History Museum. And, if what you are interested in are the gruesome stories that make your hair stand on end, here are them to give and take: like the numerous murders that took place on Antonio Grillo Street, the one in the building on Pez Street where lived the disturbing Modlin family, the neighboring nuns of the convent of San Plácido who went mad in 1628, or the plaque of Eames Demetrios that announces that we are going to enter a world of darkness. During the tour, I will recommend endless restaurants, bars (my favorite: Rocablanca, in Fuencarral, where you will fall in love with their croquettes), curious things shops and ice cream parlors, which are for all tastes. And, to finish, you will receive a detail that will sweeten your day. I guarantee that you will enjoy.
