World War II in Strasbourg: Mysteries and Legends
Tour description
When the Alsatian sky lights up with stars, it's the perfect time to discover the mysteries and legends of Strasbourg. We'll begin to learn the most surprising stories by meeting at the appointed time in front of Strasbourg Cathedral. Does this Gothic temple hide some mystery? Of course it does.
We'll then head to Place Kléber to talk about Frau Troffea. This woman, who lived in Strasbourg during the time of the Holy Roman Empire, began to dance wildly one day. Many citizens began to follow her rhythm, but nearly 400 died of heart attacks, strokes, or simple exhaustion. This is the so-called dance craze of 1518.
What could have motivated this tragedy? After investigating its possible causes, we'll continue our free night tour of Strasbourg alongside the iconic Covered Bridges. There, we'll learn about the cruel punishments imposed on people suspected of practicing pagan activities or witchcraft between the 13th and 17th centuries.
We will continue the tour by walking through the Petite France neighborhood, where we will learn disturbing stories of ghosts and murders in its streets.
We will also discover the macabre projects that Adolf Hitler's regime devised at the Reich University during the Nazi occupation of Strasbourg in the German Quarter of Strasbourg.
After a two-hour tour, we will finish at the city's Kleber Square.
