Absolutely loved Haktan and his tours. I did two of them. He is very knowledgeable and passionate. He showed and told us cool, interesting things in the old town, some of which are the oldest parts of the city. Haktan is funny and has a special talent engaging with his audience. He was very helpful with tips and answering questions. He keeps the groups to a decent size so it's intimate enough and you can hear him.

Did not enjoy the tour. Group was too large and you couldn't hear him often - he didn't use a microphone. The guide was not passionate about the history. He seemed bored with his own job. He did not have the personality for this. He didn't provide detail that I couldn't have learned on the wiki page or tourism site. He actually missed out on the older and more interesting sites/monuments very close to where we went and showed us stuff that was least interesting. I've done walking tours in over 20 countries and this was probably the worst. He was taking calls in between stops instead of engaging with others. He talked extensively about Islam, which is a religion I respect and find fascinating, but I found that part unnecessary. If I wanted a lesson on Islam, I would seek it. It would've been better to explain the beautiful and historical, unique parts of the mosques instead. I took two walking tours with Haktan after this one and they were amazing. Look for his tours instead!!!!

Response from Free Istanbul Tours
Hey Kate. Thanks you for your review. We really do care about reviews. But unfortunately we don’t agree with some points you mention: 1. there were 22 people on the tour. If you have been to many freetours. You should know on the weekend for one of the most visited cities in the world, it is a fair number of participants. We had two tour guide that day. 2. I saw on your profile that you have done the exact same tour with another company before us. In a magical city like Istanbul, I would recommend you check the itineraries of the tours you book. I think it s normal when you see the same place again and listen the history again and not find it interesting because you already heard it before. 3. In a city where 95 percent of the population is Muslim and there is 3500 mosques, the first comers to our tour expect us to mention some Islam to understand the city and it s people better. Thanks for your review anyway I hope you have a great time during the rest of your stay
